Dear Friends of Kaji Aso Studio,

Everyone is aware of the challenges meeting humanity at this time. Despite the severity and intensity of the situation, the Studio continues to provide a shared space to talk about and make art. We have had to temporarily close our doors for in-person classes and events; but we are continuing our programming online. We are grateful for your consistent support and encouragement as we continue.

Kaji Aso Studio appreciates the enthusiasm for our programming, our founder’s artworks and legacy. When people have visited the Studio in the past, they feel the rich history and are excited about the future. Most importantly they appreciate “a valuable moment of life” by sharing friendship and inspiration through art.

Class enrollment: currently 85 students are participating in weekly online watercolor, Japanese calligraphy, haiku and poetry classes.

Boston Haiku Contest: We received 282 entries for our Annual Haiku and Senryu contest, entries ranging from 14 countries around the globe…US, Europe; India; Tasmania, Australia; Romania; Russia; and more. It is heartwarming to think of these tiny three-line observations of contemporary life filling the air waves from distant Haiku hotspots located all around our planet.

Zoom presentations for the public have provided a way to be in touch and present art, music and poetry    to uplift our spirits. As many as 60 artists have participated and over 250 participants have joined. Students are encouraged to participate in the theme shows that continue for 6-8 weeks and provide ways to be creative together.

These exhibits are accessible for all by Zoom and are also available on our YouTube platform.

Celebration of Kaji Aso Studio’s 47th Anniversary: Our annual November anniversary exhibition “A Spot of Beauty”, usually held in-person at Boston’s Back Bay Prudential Center, was held online this year with a celebration of art, music and poetry. The program was well attended and received, and is now available on Kaji Aso Studio’s YouTube channel.

*The City of Boston Boston’s Arts and Culture COVID-19 Fund ($5,000),

*Boston Cultural Council and administered by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture for general operating support ($3,500)

*Mission Hill / Fenway Neighborhood Trust to match the above grant for general operating support ($3,500).

*For the special exhibition: "Tanabata: An Ancient Story for Modern Times" was supported in part by a grant from a Transformative Public Art                                      grant from the City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture ($1,000).

These grants have been very significant to offset the financial losses incurred due to the Coronavirus impact. Again, we deeply appreciate your support and look forward to a time when we can safely meet in-person again.

Sincerely, The Trustees of Kaji Aso Studio, Institute for the Arts
